Modernization of Heating Systems: Feasibility Study and Transition to Sustainable Energy

The development of sustainable urban infrastructure in the Kyrgyz Republic requires the implementation of modern engineering solutions. Efficient heating supply for settlements and industrial zones directly impacts the economic stability and environmental situation in the region. Deka Group, in partnership with Ailun Stroy LLC, has successfully completed the feasibility study (FS) for the modernization of the heating system in the village of Orlovka. This project demonstrates a practical approach to solving energy efficiency challenges at the municipal level.

Economic and Environmental Challenges of Outdated Infrastructure

Many existing thermal energy facilities were designed decades ago and are based on the use of fuel oil. The operation of such boiler houses is associated with a number of critical problems. Firstly, fuel oil is expensive and complex to logistically supply, which places a significant burden on the operating budget. Secondly, burning fuel oil is accompanied by high greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants, making such facilities environmentally unsustainable under modern environmental standards.

Conducting a professional energy audit and developing a feasibility study allows for the identification of inefficiencies and the determination of optimal vectors for reconstruction.

Comparison of Heating Modernization Scenarios

During the work on the Orlovka project, specialists conducted a detailed analysis of various architectural and engineering solutions. The choice of the optimal heating system configuration depends on the density of development, terrain, and existing heating networks. We considered the following basic scenarios:

  • Construction of a large centralized boiler house. This option involves concentrating generating capacities at a single point with subsequent transportation of the heat carrier through main networks. The solution is effective for high consumer density but requires significant investment in infrastructure and is associated with risks of heat loss during transportation.
  • Creation of a network of decentralized (modular) boiler houses. Placing compact generating units directly near consumption facilities. This approach minimizes losses in heating networks, allows flexible load regulation depending on the needs of specific buildings, and simplifies the phased commissioning of capacities.
  • Combined and hybrid solutions. Integration of traditional generating capacities with renewable energy elements or heat recovery systems to achieve the maximum coefficient of performance (COP).

Emission Reduction Potential and Economic Efficiency

The key result of the developed feasibility study was the identification of pathways for a radical reduction in environmental impact. Calculations show that the implementation of the proposed modernization measures and the transition to cleaner fuel types or modern combustion technologies can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 40%.

In addition to the environmental effect, optimizing the heating supply system ensures a significant reduction in operating costs. Implementing automated control systems and modern boilers allows for precise fuel metering and adaptation of operating modes to current weather conditions, which eliminates resource overconsumption.

Professional Approach to Feasibility Study Development

A feasibility study is a fundamental document for attracting investments and starting design and construction work. Deka Group specialists provide a comprehensive approach to FS development, which includes engineering surveys, thermal engineering calculations, environmental impact assessment, and detailed financial analysis. We focus on creating solutions that not only meet regulatory requirements but also ensure real economic return throughout the facility’s life cycle.
